Bringing Technology to Life: DeterTech Supports Osprey Conservation at Birds of Poole Harbour
DeterTech recently visited Birds of Poole Harbour to see the incredible progress being made in restoring a breeding population of ospreys to the South Coast – and to witness first-hand how our technology has helped protect one of the UK’s most exciting conservation projects.
Safeguarding a Breeding Success
Since 2017, Birds of Poole Harbour and the Roy Dennis Wildlife Foundation have translocated juvenile ospreys from Scotland to Dorset, aiming to re-establish a population after more than 180 years of absence. Thanks to this dedication, ospreys have now successfully nested at Poole Harbour for four consecutive years.
A key factor in this success has been ensuring the birds remain safe and undisturbed. DeterTech has proudly donated and deployed PID360 units at the nest sites, preventing disturbance from the public and creating a secure environment. This protection has been vital in allowing the ospreys to nest, hatch, and raise their young without interference.
Partnership in Action
Paul Morton from Birds of Poole Harbour said:
“Having the devices in place over the last several years has really allowed us to protect a really special bird, which is the osprey. Initially, the devices were put in place to protect the birds that we collected from Scotland and we’re bringing down to Southern England as part of the reintroduction program, and the devices were situated around the release pens, which stopped disturbance and any risk to the birds with people getting close to the pens and upsetting the birds.
“The devices are now situated close to the nest site, stopping people getting close to the birds, so that every single year since 2022 when the birds first nested, the nest never gets disturbed, the parent birds never get disturbed, allowing the chicks to develop, evolve, and thrive.”
This partnership shows the power of combining conservation expertise with innovative technology. By working together, we’ve been able to create the conditions needed for these magnificent birds to thrive again.
Looking Ahead
The charity’s popular boat trips not only offer visitors a unique opportunity to experience Poole Harbour’s wildlife, but also provide essential funding to sustain this vital conservation work.
At DeterTech, we are honoured to have been a key part of this journey and proud that our technology is playing an active role in protecting a growing osprey population. With continued collaboration, we look forward to supporting even greater success in the years ahead.
