All water companies play a vital role in underpinning the social and environmental prosperity of the region they serve by keeping water flowing. As such, our client water company had created a “Strategic Pipeline Alliance” to provide a water supply to sustain an area within south east England that is growing in population and make it good enough both for now and in the climate-uncertain future.
BACKGROUND AND CHALLENGE
The water company faced multiple security challenges:
- Bulky equipment
Heavy CCTV units were too cumbersome and heavy to be deployed across wide expansions of “rolling works”.
- Inconsistent security across locations
Many regional contractors deployed a range of different security measures causing confusion amongst teams and the water company.
- Lack of data
Their business often resorted to simple tours of areas to decide on what security was needed and didn’t provide real insight.
- Local areas
Many sites only had single areas for plant storage with lots of equipment, so a larger deterrent to act as secondary verification was needed.
The water comapny decided to implement an integrated security solution with DeterTech to mitigate these risks and improve its security.
SOLUTION
Deployment of Advanced Security Products.
After conducting a survey assessment with DeterTech, the water company selected the following security products for implementation:
- PID360
To provide light-weight bold, armoured & imposing deterrent on soft remote ground to protect key assets.
- Smart Recon Camera
Covert camera solution with built in AI, number plate recognition and privacy zones for gated access areas.
- Crime Intelligence Support
To provide real crime insights from the UK’s 43 police regions.
- SmartWater
Forensic marking of all plant and transferable grease on tops of fences.
- DTSentinel
CCTV Tower unit deployed for site compound for live view and secondary verification of triggers.
These tools were chosen for their ability to integrate and form a comprehensive security environment.
IMPLEMENTATION
The implementation was carried out in phases:
- Phase 1: Planning and Testing
The water company collaborated with DeterTech’s survey teams to develop a security strategy. They set up a pilot program to test the PID, SmartWater and Sentinel cameras in a live environment to measure efficacy and evaluate compatibility with existing infrastructure and ground.
- Phase 2: Site Integration and ARC Connectivity
DeterTech deployed PID units and Smart Recon (covert) cameras at all key asset locations and entry points and integrated them with DeterTech’s Alarm Receiving Centre (ARC) for centralised monitoring. This helped identify unauthorised entrance and alert the water comapny’s team and police to any threats or intrusion.
- Phase 3: DTSentinel (CCTV tower deployment)
Tower units support was provided out to all compound/ hard standing locations, providing live view, secondary verification and health and safety monitoring capabilities to investigate RIDDOR events and identify and isolate threats.
- Phase 4: Continuous Monitoring and Reporting
With all technology products, crime intelligence and teams integrated into the DeterTech solution, the security and water company security team now had real-time visibility into potential threats from generated reports for necessary management and audits broken down to their live sites across their region.
KEY OUTCOMES
The deployment of these security products and resources significantly strengthened the water company’s security.
- Reduction in Security Incidents
Theft attempts decreased by over 85%, and there were no successful theft attacks in the six months following deployment.
- Enhanced Health & Safety
Enabling live monitoring of high risk areas ensured compliance to H&S expectations, reducing the risk of RIDDOR events.
- Improved Detection and Response
The DeterTech network system enabled faster threat detection and response, reducing incident response time from hours to seconds and minutes.
- Streamlined Approach
With a move to a simple and single partner onsite allowed the water company teams to very quickly get used to equipment and allow them to focus on their tasks.
- Site Suitability
Easier relocation of PID equipment across very mobile locations and sites enabled the water company to always ensure their key assets were secure from threats.
LESSONS LEARNED
Through this case study, the water company learned several valuable lessons:
- Responsible Health and Safety
RIDDOR events based on live 1080p footage examples enable key learns are taken from any incidents.
- Comprehensive monitoring is key
Our DeterTech solution provided the peace of mind the water company needed and be the partner that allowed them to focus on their projects instead of downing tools to fix security issues.
- Integration matters
Having security products by a single partner that integrate well via a local team ensures seamless operation and allow them to drive out cost as well as risk.
- Adaptability
Sites and threats evolve, so having a local point of contact ensured this was always taken care of without impacting day to day life.
CONCLUSION
The water company’s strategic use of DeterTech’s leading security technology helped them build a multi-layered defence against crime threats, improved regulatory compliance, and created a safer environment for all. This case study illustrates the importance of an integrated approach to security, combining advanced technology with proactive insight data and leading manned guards to achieve a robust security solution.
